In a historic first Indian Super League (ISL) clash in Shillong, Mumbai City FC emerged victorious with a crucial 2-0 win over NorthEast United FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. This victory not only extended Mumbai City’s undefeated away run to eight games but also marked a significant moment as the ISL made its debut in Meghalaya. The goals were netted by Bipin Singh, who opened the scoring in the 40th minute, and Chhangte, who added a second in stoppage time.
The first half of the match saw Mumbai City FC face intense pressure from NorthEast United FC, who pinned the Islanders back into their own half for the majority of the opening 45 minutes. Despite the early onslaught, Mumbai City's defense held firm, displaying composure and resilience under fire. NorthEast United FC created numerous chances, registering close to six shots on goal in the first 30 minutes alone, but were unable to break the deadlock.
The Islanders' resistance finally paid off in the 40th minute when a cross from Brandon found Bipin, who headed the ball into the net with certainty, giving Mumbai City the lead in Shillong. This was Bipin's first goal of the season, a crucial moment that shifted the momentum in favor of the Islanders
The second half began with Mumbai City FC on the front foot, eager to build on their lead. The first chance of the half came in the 46th minute when Valpuia made an adventurous stride forward, playing a quick 1-2 with Chhangte before unleashing a shot. However, the effort was saved.
Minutes later, Chhangte made a run into the center and got a shot away, but it too was straight at the keeper. NorthEast United FC continued to press, and in the 54th minute, Buanthanglun Samte had a promising opportunity, but Phurba Lachenpa was equal to the task, making a crucial save to preserve Mumbai City FC’s lead.
Substitutions began in the 56th minute when Ayush was replaced by Jorge Ortiz. This was followed by a double substitution in the 72nd minute, with Jayesh Rane and Thaer Krouma coming on for Jon Toral and Brandon Fernandes. Prabir Das and Sahil Panwar also came on for Nathan Rodrigues and Bipin Singh, respectively.
In stoppage time, Mumbai City FC doubled their lead to seal the victory. What appeared to be a clearance from Tiri became a precise long ball to Chhangte. With supreme control, he surged forward and buried it into the bottom right corner.
Mumbai City will be in action again when they take on FC Goa in a home game, on February 12.
