Mumbai City FC faced a challenging encounter at home against Punjab FC at the Mumbai City Football Arena. Despite a spirited performance, the Islanders succumbed to a 3-0 defeat. Following the result, Mumbai City FC now sit in 10th position on the table, with 10 points from eight matches.
Mumbai City FC created their first opportunity of the evening as early as the 6th minute. Jon Toral delivered a perfectly weighted pass to Lallianzuala Chhangte, who attempted to square the ball across the box to Nikos Karelis. However, a decisive intervention from the Punjab FC’s defense denied the Islanders an early breakthrough.
In the 25th minute, Bipin Singh sent in a teasing cross into the box, but Nikos Karelis' header narrowly missed the target. Moments later, Karelis returned the favor with an incisive pass to Bipin, who delivered a precise ball for Chhangte, who was unable to connect cleanly, and the scores remained level.
Mumbai City FC continued to press forward, testing Punjab FC's goalkeeper Ravi Kumar in the 37th minute. Jayesh Rane, after a link up with Jon Toral, unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box that forced a sharp save from Ravi Kumar.
Just before halftime, Punjab FC capitalized on a defensive lapse by the Islanders. Ezequiel Vidal struck a left-footed shot from outside the box, finding the top-left corner and giving Punjab FC the lead.
Early in the second half, Mumbai City FC found themselves in further trouble. A conceded penalty in the 53rd minute allowed Luka Majcen to step up and convert confidently, doubling Punjab FC's advantage to 2-0.
The Islanders responded with urgency. Substitutions saw Brandon Fernandes and Noufal PN introduced for Lallianzuala Chhangte and Bipin Singh, injecting fresh energy into the attack.
In the 61st minute, Jon Toral came agonizingly close to pulling one back, as his powerful strike from outside the box rattled the post. A minute later, Toral tried his luck again after a cross from Noufal, but his effort went wide.
Mumbai City FC continued their pursuit of a goal. In the 77th minute, they had a flurry of attempts, with Karelis and Tiri both forcing the Punjab FC defense to scramble. Despite their best efforts, a goal remained out of reach.
Punjab FC eventually sealed the game with a late strike from Mushaga Bakenga in the 84th minute, rounding off a challenging night for the Islanders.
