Mumbai City FC are set to face NorthEast United FC in a landmark fixture at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong, as the Indian Super League makes its debut in the city. The Islanders, looking to return to winning ways, will be eager to put their best foot forward against a strong opponent. Head coach Petr Kratky and captain Lallianzuala Chhangte emphasised the team’s focus and determination ahead of the encounter.

Reflecting on their previous outing, which ended in a goalless draw against East Bengal FC, Kratky acknowledged both the positives and areas for improvement. “There are areas we need to improve, but also many where we are doing well. It’s a new challenge for us against NorthEast United FC, so we need to focus on ourselves and execute our plans. I’m confident we will score goals.”

Addressing the reverse fixture, where Mumbai City FC fell to a 3-0 defeat against NorthEast United FC earlier in the season, Kratky remained optimistic about the team’s progress. “Yes, we conceded three goals, but there were many positives to take away. Two of those goals came late, and while the scoreline wasn’t ideal for us, we are working hard behind the scenes to improve where needed. I believe we’re in a good place at the moment.”

He further added, “There are plenty of positives for us to build on. Defensively, the team is doing well, but defending isn’t just about the back four—it’s a collective effort from the whole team. Now, we need to focus more on our attack, especially in converting chances. We are creating opportunities, which is a positive, but we need to be quicker, take fewer touches, and be more decisive in front of goal.”

Chhangte, looking ahead to the clash, acknowledged the strength of the opposition but reaffirmed the team’s intent. “Well, we are up against a very good team, especially in attack. They are one of the best in the ISL this season, and we are well aware of what they can do. But our focus is entirely on our team. We know the result from last time, and we are determined to make it right. We haven’t come here just to take a point or accept a loss—we are here for all three points and will do everything possible to win.”

On Mumbai City FC’s ambitions this season, he added, “I remember last year when everyone doubted us, but we overcame the challenges and proved how good we are as a team. I truly believe we can do it again. We just need to stick together as a family, keep improving every day, and stay committed to our plan.”

Friday’s fixture will be a historic moment for Indian football, marking Shillong’s debut as an ISL venue. Expressing his enthusiasm for the initiative, Chhangte remarked, “I think it’s a smart move from NorthEast United FC, and something we’ve been looking forward to for a long time. It’s great to see it happening because there are many passionate football fans in Shillong, and I hope they turn up in large numbers. This will help strengthen the connection between the game and its fan base.”
